Historical Origins: Yantai is the earliest region in China where Western apples were cultivated. In 1871, Western apples were introduced from the United States by American missionary John Nivison. Local Yantai farmers subsequently adopted grafting techniques using branches to transform the native apple varieties, thus ushering in a new era of apple cultivation in Yantai.
Yantai Red Fuji apples are a premium representative among Red Fuji varieties, renowned both domestically and internationally for their exceptional quality and delightful taste. Here's a detailed introduction about them:
Historical Origins: Yantai is the earliest region in China where Western-style apples were cultivated. In 1871, American missionary John Nivison introduced Western apple varieties from the United States. Local Yantai farmers then innovatively grafted branches onto native apple trees, giving birth to a new era of apple cultivation in Yantai. In the early 1980s, Yantai developed the Red Fuji apple, renowned for its thin skin, abundant juice, and vibrant red color. By 1995, the "Yanfu" No. 1 to No. 6 varieties had been successfully bred. By the late 1990s, the Red Fuji had completely replaced the "Guoguang" variety, becoming the dominant apple cultivar in Yantai today.
Growing environment: Yantai is located in the heart of the Jiaodong Peninsula, nestled in the golden zone for apple cultivation. The region enjoys moderate annual rainfall and abundant sunshine, with predominantly hilly terrain and mostly brown soil rich in essential minerals. For instance, Qixia City, known as the "Apple Capital of China," benefits from ample sunlight, simultaneous rainfall and heat during the growing season, and significant diurnal temperature differences in autumn. Combined with its well-drained, loose soil structure, these conditions create an ideal setting for thriving apple orchards.
Variety Characteristics: The fruits are round or nearly round, large in size, with an average single fruit weight of 250 grams—though some can reach up to 350 grams—displaying uniformity and a well-proportioned shape. The fruit surface is smooth, covered with a natural bloom and boasts a glossy sheen, featuring a thick wax layer. The base color is yellow-green, accented by vibrant red streaks or patches. The flesh is creamy yellow-white, dense yet finely crisp, juicy, and offers a perfectly balanced sweet-and-sour flavor. With soluble solids content around 15%, this variety exhibits excellent overall quality.
Taste and Flavor: Yantai Red Fuji apples boast a crisp, sweet, and juicy texture, with tender, fragrant, and delicately crunchy flesh—and their skin is remarkably thin. Unlike the common Red Fuji apples that are uniformly bright red all over, Qixia Red Fuji apples feature a mottled skin pattern, adorned with striking crimson stripes. Thanks to their longer growing period, these apples are even sweeter, crisper, and simply more delicious.
Yantai Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs: Yantai apples have remained China's No. 1 fruit brand for 15 consecutive years, ranking first in the "China Fruit Industry." According to the 2022 Regional Public Brand Value Report for Fruits, the brand is now valued at 15.294 billion yuan. Among them, Yantai Red Fuji, the most renowned variety of Yantai apples, is one of the most popular apple types in the market—and is even hailed as the "aristocrat of the apple world."
